In 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono leave their large house in London for a small two-room loft in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Both feel liberated: Lennon from the overwhelming public image of being a Beatle, and Ono from the sexist and racist attacks of fans who blamed her for breaking up the world’s most famous band. In New York, they immerse themselves in the city’s vibrant counterculture and become part of a circle that includes figures such as beat poet Allen Ginsberg and activist A. J. Weberman. Inspired by this environment, Lennon and Ono become increasingly involved in political activism, supporting the civil rights movement, protesting the Vietnam War, and opposing the Nixon administration, even as the momentum of the Flower Power era begins to fade.
