GARDENS OF SONGS
Events
The new full-length quartet Gardens of Songs (2026) by Offenbach-based composer Jagoda Szmytka is written for soprano, mezzo-soprano, piano, and electric guitar. The work expands the tradition of art song through experimental techniques and explores the relationship between art and nature. The composition draws inspiration from the gardens of historical figures Daisy von Pless, Helena Radziwiłłowa, and Izabela Czartoryska, as well as the research expeditions of Frankfurt-based naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717). It also draws on Szmytka’s own series of drawings, Journal d’été (2024) and Garden Journal (2024/25). Projected throughout the Naxos Hall, these drawings frame the performance as a visual and spatial experience.
