The Art of Storytelling between Damascus and Frankfurt
For centuries, storytelling has held a central place in the collective memory of the Levant, and the Hakawati was the undisputed master of evening gatherings. The Hakawati was not only a storyteller but also opened doors to other worlds, bridging history and fiction, reality and legend.
Theater Willy Praml renews this tradition at Produktionshaus NAXOS with its Syrian ensemble member Muawia Harb, who brings to life the tales from 1001 Nights. This is anything but a classic reading—it is vibrant folk theater, with the whole hall swept up in the performance.

Such an offering within a German cultural institution for an Arab community is a rarity. For us, it is a joyful step toward opening our theater to our Arab friends. And of course, everyone who does not speak Arabic and has never smoked a shisha is warmly welcome, too.
