The Produktionshaus NAXOS

The Produktionshaus NAXOS —
A house for independently producing artists

It stands for an open, self-organized structure of artistic work—beyond institutional routines. As a place for engaging with social reality, it is collectively supported and interdisciplinary in its approach. Developed by artists for artists, NAXOS creates space for artistic work in all its diversity—accessible, process-oriented and with a clear social focus. The structure is not static, but rather sees itself as a framework that can be shaped collaboratively.

Experimental small-scale dance pieces meet spoken theater that makes use of the entire expanse of the hall. Political events are just as much a part of the house's identity as the open formats for the city district.

In an unrenovated industrial hall without central heating, pragmatic art communities emerge that seek not just harmony but attitude. A culture of debate is important to us—it is the basis of our coexistence and the driving force behind our artistic processes. NAXOS is a place where people meet, talk about each other's work, challenge one another, argue and think ahead.

Founding & management

Produktionshaus NAXOS was founded in the middle of Frankfurt as a result of the long-standing collaboration between Theater Willy Praml, studioNAXOS, Eleganz aus Reflex, Stange Produktionen and Dorfproduct. Under the roof of the Naxoshalle, it brings together different generations of performing artists and offers a continuous platform for free, innovative theater work.

The current management team consists of Birgit Heuser, Simon Möllendorf, Michael Weber and Nils Wildegans.

More than theater

Produktionshaus NAXOS also includes the naxos.Cinema (naxos.Kino) and the Naxos Hall Concerts (Naxos Hallenkonzerte).

naxos.Kino is dedicated to documentary films on Tuesdays. The screenings are followed by discussions with directors or experts to explore socio-political topics in greater depth.

Naxos Hallenkonzerte present a diverse musical program every month—from classical through New Music to experimental electronics—and open up space for interdisciplinary projects. Both formats expand the artistic spectrum of the house and create spaces for exchange and reflection.

Autonomous, collective, accessible

Artists work here autonomously and independently—and are supported by the house with technical expertise and organizational assistance. We make decisions collectively, and our program is also created in cooperation with the Independent Scene: a jury consisting of representatives of ID_Frankfurt, State Association of Independent Performing Arts Hessen (laPROF Hessen e.V.) and representatives of the production house's management team decides on the projects submitted.

The working approach of Produktionshaus NAXOS is characterized by a lived practice of cooperation based on mutual respect.

Diverse spaces—one shared house

The Naxoshalle offers a variety of spatial conditions: from a large hall through a compact black box to an open bar—mostly with natural daylight, with a sprung dance floor upon request. This variety enables numerous formats: performance, spoken theater, dance, research and interdisciplinary approaches.

Accessibility

Produktionshaus NAXOS has an open and inclusive attitude and is actively committed to creating a low-barrier program.

We are continuously working to identify and remove barriers to access, always accompanied by the expertise of and in dialogue with user groups with different disabilities, as well as in exchange with the Independent Scene—under the conditions of a self-managed structure.

Further information can be found on the accessibility page.

Location and responsibility

The Naxoshalle is located in the center of Frankfurt, in the immediate vicinity of the NaxosAtelier youth center (Jugendladen NaxosAtelier), initiatives, and galleries. This proximity creates a “third space” where artistic practice, urban society, and political questions intertwine.

For years, Produktionshaus NAXOS has been a reliable cultural-political participant in the Independent Scene in Frankfurt and Hesse.

NAXOS is not an island

The house is part of regional, national, and international networks, including the Hessian Theater Academy (HTA), the Network of Independent Theaters (NFT), and ID_Frankfurt.

Produktionshaus NAXOS stands for collaborative production methods, solidarity, and artistic practice that responds to social change.
