Wo/Men
Events
WO/MEN tells the story of six Albanian burrneshas—women who, for different reasons, have chosen to take on the social role of men. This is a practice deeply rooted in the traditions of their country. They have chosen this path to escape patriarchal structures, to avoid misogynistic violence, to support their families economically, or to evade forced marriages—in other words, to be free. The protagonists of the film share their lives and personal journeys. They speak about freedom and oppression, and about how they break through gender boundaries. At the same time, they reveal the price they have to pay for this choice. WO/MEN challenges stereotypes and conventional gender debates, showing that being a woman is still considered less valuable—and that this is a global reality.
