Artificial intelligence shapes many areas of our everyday lives: for example in search engines, voice assistants, and social media. Beyond that, it strongly influences developments in business and industry. However, it would be a mistake to believe that this technology operates as a neutral system. In reality, many algorithms are primarily trained on data from white, male users.

Coded Bias by Shalini Kantayya asks what this imbalance means for people who fall outside these patterns. The film follows the research of MIT Media Lab scientist Joy Buolamwini, who investigates widespread biases in algorithms. She previously discovered that many facial recognition technologies fail to correctly identify darker-skinned faces or misclassify women’s faces. Yet even when algorithmic classification appears to be “correct,” the broader problem of surveillance and political control remains.
